Ancestral Drumming

Music is an integral part of all indigenous healing and combat practices. It's sound that allows the Shaman to fall intro trance to journey into the nether realms, and its the beating of the drum that stokes the warrior's inner fire when charging into battle. The same way we believe that healing and combat are two sides of the same coin, we believe that we could do neither without the inspiration and medicine of music.

This is why we have introduced ancestral drumming into the Kailukuan School Curriculum.

Join us every Friday night at 6pm for Introduction to Ancestral Drumming, led by Resident Teacher and Instrumentalist Jeff Rivo.

Jeff is an instrumentalist and teacher of sound and percussion. His ancestral lineages are Ibaloi and Kankana-ey from Tuba and Bokod in Benguet, and Pangasinense from Pozorrubio, Pangasinan. As a lifelong musician, he considers himself an ongoing student in sound and it’s mysticism.

With practices in Capoeira and Silat, Jeff brings a unique and internal perspective in the combination of sound and movement. He believes that music brings forth our abilities to align movements rhythmically and to help the mind engage and focus. His teaching style is unorthodox and is based in the intelligence of the heart.

Learn basic percussion techniques with various ancestral drum and percussion instruments.
